Philippos Photiadis presents Ordinary Fairy Tales at Hermès

At the store of Hermès in the center of Athens, Voukourestiou 1 & Stadiou 4, Philippos Photiadis is presenting Ordinary Fairy Tales in the shop windows until the 15th of June.

Every year Hermès invites a local artist to tell stories through the windows of the store. This year Hermès chose “Ordinary Fairy Tales,” an installation by architect and artist Philippos Photiadis.

The story told through the installation of Philippos Photiadis, is one of a double world. The fantastic hero Zafiris, from his fairy tale “Zafiris Kontopitharos”, is puzzled while trying to process this incomprehensible, to him, natural environment he is wandering about in.

Meanwhile, in a virtual microcosm, ordinary figures grapple with carefree activities, unperturbed by the “real world” surrounding them on a larger scale. Aside from the obvious reference to the puzzling nature of everyday life, there is also a symbolic reference made to the tale of Zafiris Kontopitharos, who throughout his journey and adventure is accompanied by a mysterious box that symbolizes forbidden desire and happy fairy tale endings.

And here a small selection of his artistic work.

About the artist
Philippos Photiadis studied architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA 1993, BArch 1994) and at Harvard Graduate School of Design (March 1999). He is a founding member of the creative company "we design", based in Athens (since 2001). He has taught as appointed lecturer at the Architecture Department of the University of Patras (2008-2010). Alongside his practice as an architect he has been painting and is involved in illustration as well. He has participated in numerous group and solo art exhibitions in Athens, at the galleries Agathi, Martinos and Zoumboulakis. In 2011 his fairy tale 'Zaphiris Kontopitharos' was published by Militos publications.

Satu Maaranen, winner of Hyères International Fashion Festival 2013

On April 28th 2013, the competition at the Hyeres International Fashion Festival awarded the young Finnish designer, Satu Maaranen for her women’s collection.

Offering unparalleled access to the veritable world of fashion and style is the Hyères Festival, celebrating fashion full of poesy and excess in a haute couture spirit.

Didier Grumbach, President of the Fédération française de la couture (and President of Hyères Festival) said after the event that he pays particular attention to the personality of the designer:

“These days, it is the brand that matters more than the price or product. [The brand] is symbolized, at least initially, by the individual.
“ Heavily inspired by paint workshops, the use of splashed print, brush strokes or peaceful flowers, Satu Maaranen’s “arty” spirit of fashion resculpts the silhouette through her use of oversized volumes. Within her collection, we sense inspiration taken from the costumes designed by Hubert de Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday”, restyled in cocoon volumes.

To render the wardrobe even more modern, the designer also implements natural textures to some of her pieces, such as fragments of grass or sand…

Looking forward to the collection to follow and her next visit to the Première Vision tradeshow, check out the designer’s website…

How to get the look of Lindsey Wixson in YSL's Marrakesh Sunset

Lloyd Simmonds, Creative Director of Make-Up Yves Saint Laurent Beauté describes how to get the look of Lindsey Wixon as in the ad campaign of Marrakesh Sunset.

Sunset eyes

“The Marrakesh Sunset Palette contains warm shades gilded by a Saharienne sunset. For day, mix the brown and rosy shades for a smoldering nude look.
At night, apply the violet in a smoky effect and add a touch of gold to the inner corners of the eyes to brighten your look. To take eyes to captivating extremes, I blend the Dessin du Regard Waterproof N° 10 Violet Massa over the entire eyelid as a base, then I warm up the eyebrow arch with the golden shade. You can also use the gold to highlight the temples and cheekbones to accentuate the eye make-up for a truly YSL look.”

Lip fever

“To enhance a matte complexion and add an ultra sultry touch to the lips, I use Rouge Pur Couture Golden Lustre N° 115 Brun Sultan. Its rich, golden colour completes the warm, luminous make-up look and creates a pulse of colour that is both natural-looking and surprising.”

Nail tension

“With the face made up in a variation on nude shades, an exciting contrast is created with nails in strong colours, full of personality and fantasy. Green, violet, taupe, on the beach and in the city, they give radiance to the look and allow you to create matching twinsets on fingertips and toes.”

Sunset in Marrakesh with Lindsey Wixson by Terry Richardson for YSL

Terry Richardson captured Lindsey Wixson for the ad campaign of Yves Saint Laurent Beauté: Sunset in Marrakesh.

Sunset.
Glowing shades of violet, bronze, coral and gold illuminate the sky.
A lustrous glimmer proclaims the arrival of twilight.
Like a tantalizing muse,
the YSL woman is silhouetted by the sun’s last rays.

A halo like an intimate golden caress on her tanned skin.
As the sun sets,
its breathtaking rays ignite her incandescent beauty.

Matte complexion, sunset eyes, sensual lips, flashing nails.

The YSL woman gives herself to the feverish spirit of summer.

"Sunset, the magical hour when the sky changes colour, taking on a subtle palette of warm, heady tones that ignite with the first violet glimmers of summer. The radiance of Saharienne heat, contrasted by fresh waves of twilight, sets the tone for the Summer Look 2013 by Yves Saint Laurent. A variation on torrid, golden hues heightened and cooled by touches of violet, coral, fuchsia and green.”

Get ready for the Hypnôse Show by Alber Elbaz and Lancôme!

The colorful and playful film about the Hypnôse Show by Alber Elbaz and Lancôme will be released online on June 3, 2013.

The cooperation between Lancôme and Alber Elbaz, is considered by many the most exciting project between a fashion designer and a cosmetics company, and promises to be the event of the year. The collection will be released in a limited number and will be available in stores starting on June 15.

Meanwhile on June 3, Lancôme will reveal the film that inspired the designer to celebrate this collaboration, which highlights of the eccentric luxury and elegance with a touch of humor.

In Paris, a few steps away from the Seine, the show is about to begin. Around the catwalk the audience is excited and shouting 'Oh là là!'. The atmosphere is electrifying and lively expressions reaching the limits of extravagance! As the lights dim and the silence falls, only the eyes and lashes of spectator stand in the hall. Eyes during the show are wide open with curiosity, sometimes full of confidence, sometimes shiny. In each case the eyelashes beating in the dark with excitement. When the first silhouette appears on the catwalk, dressed in cloth full of hearts and a huge bow under the bust, eyelashes fluttering faster like being electrified.
A second figure in a backless dress full of stars appears. The bow is this time the color of bright blue. Finally makes its appearance a third figure with pink and black dress DOTS in highlighting her curves and cause dizziness.

The public opening wide its eyes, eyelashes beating madly, between ecstasy and sheer bliss.
From New York to Shanghai and Rio, the whole world monitor blocked the broadcasting of the Hypnose Show, when suddenly ...?

"Our job is to tell stories. Everything starts from there, "says Alber Elbaz. "It all started with the incredibly rounded curves on the packaging of mascara. From the first moment I saw them, I thought the female body. There is something of the story of Cinderella and the magic chariot to this idea of transformation. The transition from the imaginary to the real done with the help of makeup that illuminates the imagination. This was the source of inspiration for my fashion show where all you see is one eye n 'blink entranced in the front row as models are transformed into mascara."

From 27 to 31 May, three teasers will be launched, each lasting a few seconds, it will give the public a chance to peek behind the scenes of the show, that excess and playful disposal, that have the distinctive style of his drawings Alber Elbaz .

And finally on June 3, the revelation of the movie will be on YouTube and the facebook pages of Lancôme: one minute and 30 seconds full of excitement and colors. It took more than six months of work to get life plans of the famous designer, in collaboration with Pascal Dangin.

"Alber was born to create stories" emphasizes Youcef S. Nabi, President of Lancôme. "It all started with the story narrated in the form of a short film. The protagonists of the film are mascara, exactly as you have imagined. I do not believe that there was another that created a product in this way, and that makes this collection so unique. Once again, a story so original and full of joy: pure Elbaz and pure Lancôme!"

The limited edition collection of Alber Elbaz and Lancôme will be available in stores starting June 15. Includes mascara, shadow palettes, odd shadows and for the first time in Lancôme, false eyelashes. This is the first time the designer signs makeup collection.

Pure Abstraction by Yiorgos Eleftheriades

Yiorgos Eleftheriades, a greek fashion designer based in Athens, presented his womens fall-winter 2013-2014 collection 'Pure Abstraction'.

About the collection
Inspired by the pure abstraction, the reduction to the essentials of form and the clearly defined surfaces of 'non color' as practiced in the De Stijl movement and the function and simplicity of Walter Gropius' Bauhaus buildings, Yiorgos Eleftheriades' Autumn Winter 2014 collection states the need to remove the barrier between formality and comfort and redefine the rules of modern elegance.

The shapes are strong and geometric. Soft, oversized shoulders are emphasized by a clearly defined waist courtesy of big asymmetrical belts. Large kimono and raglan sleeves add drama to the outerwear. Coats are deceptively layered in Cubist inspired patchwork. Wide or 'A' line skirts make use of big pleats and folds for extra movement and often stop at or below the knee. Soft, draped shawl and big stand up collars envelope the face. Trousers, narrow or wide with a nod to menswear, are kept short.

Going back to the Bauhaus principle that seeks truth to materials, the collection focuses around traditional fabrics that are often used in country sportswear. Tweed, houndstooth, cashmere, flannel, leather and pony skin create an androgynous look, comfortable, modern and sleek. Wool jersey becomes luxurious when quilted and used into stylish sportswear. Decomposing, metallic knitwear balances the glamour of techno-georgette, silk satin and cloque, crepe de chine and abstractly weaved spidery lace. Bold material combinations create either geometric patchwork patterns or intriguing layering. Colors are primarily neutral. Black, white, cream and grey. Ink blue, deep brown, camel, bone and shades of beige are highlighted by flashes of parrot and pine green.

Here a few of my favorites.
