H&M Design Award 2013 – the winning collection by Minju Kim

The winner of the H&M Design Award 2013, Minju Kim, has developed pieces from her collection with H&M to be sold at selected H&M stores this autumn.

Minju, a 27 year-old graduate from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, was selected by a jury of international fashion experts for her collection which transformed characters into outfits.
As part of her overall prize, nine women’s pieces and two accessories have been developed with the H&M design team.

The collection will be available from October 17 at selected H&M stores in Sweden, Denmark, the US, UK, Japan, South Korea, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany as well as online.

It will also be available at Opening Ceremony in New York, Los Angeles and London, the first time an H&M collection will be sold at Opening Ceremony stores.

“Creating this collection with H&M has been an amazing experience. My designs are about turning characters into outfits, and it’s exciting to think that these characters will soon be worn by people around the world. Winning the H&M Design Award has given me a unique insight into the global fashion industry,” says Minju Kim.

“I’m so happy that pieces from Minju Kim’s winning collection from the H&M Design Award 2013 will soon be available. Minju has such a unique design signature, one that combines playfulness, fantasy and optimism with great creativity and technical skill. These pieces by Minju Kim show H&M’s commitment to the future of design and to helping move fashion forward,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s Creative Head of Design.

"Minju Kim is a shining gem and a real treasure. She is a girl with great imagination and skills, and has a unique personal vision and approach towards fashion. It has been a pleasure to work with her,” says Walter Van Beirendonck, Head of the Fashion Department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

Minju’s pieces for H&M bring the dream world of Manga to life with unique cuts and clever fabric combinations. A collarless coat in vivid yellow, a short jacket in two contrasting jacquards or a cape made of black wool creates a sweet rounded silhouette. The textured heavy knit links the sleeves to the body with cartoonish curves, while a neoprene-fronted sweatshirt is printed with Manga-inspired images drawn by Minju herself. A paneled minidress mixes matt with shine, while jacquard trousers keep their structured shape. To complete the look there’s a black and white wedge platform lace-up and a characterful turquoise leather collar.

Minju is a designer from South Korea who graduated in spring 2013 from the final Masters year at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. She won the H&M Design Award 2013 with her collection titled “Dear My Friend”, inspired by Japanese Manga cartoonist Junji Ito, and received a €50,000 prize, a show at the Mercedes-Benz Stockholm Fashion Week in January 2013 and the chance to develop pieces from her collection with H&M.

The H&M Design Award, an annual prize launched in 2012, was established to encourage and support young fashion graduates as they set out at the very beginning of their careers. For the 2013 awards, graduates from nineteen design schools in eight countries were considered competing first to be the local winner before showing their work to a grand jury. The jury, which included H&M’s Creative Head of Design Ann-Sofie Johansson, designer Jonathan Saunders, editor-at-large Tim Blanks, blogger and photographer Hanneli Mustaparta, fashion journalist Kristopher Arden-Houser, stylist Leith Clark, photographer Sølve Sundsbø and H&M’s creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch, chose Minju Kim as winner of the 2013 H&M Design Award.

Salvatore Ferragamo designed Ron Howard's "RUSH" wardrobe

The exclusive world première of “RUSH”, the new film directed by the Academy Award Winning director Ron Howard, opened internationally on 13 September.

Based on a true story, “RUSH” is set in the epic 1976 racing season, at the pinnacle of Formula 1’s golden era, and focuses on the legendary rivalry between two great opponents: Niki Lauda played by Daniel Brühl and James Hunt played by Chris Hemsworth, both iconic sportsmen of their time.

The story explores the no-holds-barred rivalry of the two drivers, who are chalk and cheese in terms of character and lifestyle: on the one hand the cold and methodical Austrian Niki Lauda and on the other the unpredictable British playboy James Hunt.

The costumes worn by Niki Lauda’s and his wife Marlene Lauda’s characters were designed by Salvatore Ferragamo.

Alexandra Maria Lara as Marlene Lauda

Massimiliano Giornetti, creative director at Salvatore Ferragamo, explained “I created Niki Lauda’s character’s wardrobe for the film with his most distinctive traits in mind, an extremely determined sportsman, obsessed with perfection, never leaving anything to chance, whether it be a strategic move or a stylistic detail. To reflect his strong and unyielding character, I chose exclusive fabrics, clean cuts and sharp forms for his clothes: from impeccably tailored fitted Prince of Wales jackets to short suede jackets with leather trim combined with denim. A stylish and subtly refined allure that is also the epitome of pure intrinsic elegance. All of which imbued with the unmistakeable fashion sense of the 1970s, which remains a source of highly modern inspiration”.

A reinterpretation of contemporary luxury for a style that weaves together the culture of yesterday and the speed of today in a totally unique manner.

About Vanessa G Fashion Label
Historically and by its definition, “Fashion” and “Art” are separate disciplines in the creative space. Taking into account the subtle similarities in the discipline of Art and Fashion, and boldly merging the creative traits of Art and Fashion to create a unique fashion experience, is Vanessa G’s point of inspiration.

That is the school of thought that best describes the Vanessa G Brand philosophy wherein Fashion and Art are treated as one discipline, expressed through different mediums and thus taking different forms.

Every garment of “Vanessa G” endeavours to look like a piece of art, an ultimate statement of luxury that is not only unique in looks but also creates a unique, wearable, character defining fashion statement.

Exquisite, unique clothing pieces from Vanessa G, in addition to bespoke accessories, will be positioned for the upwardly mobile, affluent and well-heeled women of today that may have satiated their appetite for traditional luxury brands, and longing for a new bespoke experience with this unique offering of style, quality and intense design. This Customer knows that there needs to be something more to set them apart, and at the same time retaining a sense of bespoke individuality, hence their connect with Vanessa G‘s “Art’Outure” - A Luxurious expression of Art and Fashion.

This luxury brand clearly has that something more, and will satiate yearning and simultaneously proliferate it; one piece will never be enough.

The Label is positioned as a high end (designer price points) luxury line where Vanessa is the Label’s Creative Director.

Stathis Samantas Spring-Summer 2014 collection

Stathis Samantas presents his spring-summer 2014 collection of shoes, from stilettos to flat shoes, from bold colors to pastels and nude.

Key features of the greek shoe designer are the clean, strict lines and geometric shapes, accentuated by bold colors or by calm pastel colors to highlight another detail in the design.

Concentric circles with different diameter, zigzags and lines ending in spirals coming out of the known limits who wants to touch the straps over the foot. An orgasm of geometry.

Heels follow the linear aesthetic of the collection. They are thin stiletto of 13cm, descending to 10,5 cm heel with a very heavy base, result sharply to dagger, giving the impression of an "inverted balance'' and of course summer flat shoes .

The materials and colors are combined in such a way to support the possible outline shapes . The nude shade in conjunction with pvc gives a sense of transparency , purity, and quiet strength.

The black and green suede give a feeling of weightlessness and luxury combined with leather silver mirror, whose glare finally leveled the satin sheen soft Sevres .

The skins very thin and soft, have smooth surfaces without stamps and give a smooth image on the shoes, avoiding many visual information and highlight patterns and lines.
