Fong Leng: Fashion & Art @ Amsterdam Museum

The Amsterdam Museum opened today the exhibition Fong Leng - Fashion & Art designs from Fong Leng, including recent and not previously shown.

Fashion designer and artist Fong Leng is " la grande dame" in the fashion circuit of the 70s and 80s of the twentieth century in the Netherlands.
With her quirky creations and dazzling fashion shows she gains fame in the Netherlands and abroad.

Fong Leng & Mathilde Willink

In the colorful 70s Fong Leng opens her store in the PC Hooftstraat, Amsterdam. A boutique where the society of the Netherlands and other fashion lovers came often.
One of them is Mathilde Willink (1938-1977) , wife of painter Carel Willink. With the creations of Fong Leng Mathilde is a striking presence in the streets of Amsterdam.
The exhibition includes among other the leopard coat (1973) of Mathilde.

Characteristic for the designs of Fong Leng is the combination of different materials such as leather and silk. Additionally she adds handicraft techniques like appliqué and pleating.
Fong Leng calls her designs pieces of art.
Besides these impressive creations Fong Leng also designs more wearable clothing, less labor-intensive.

For the first time the Amsterdam Museum presents recent work from the private collection of Fong Leng alongside creations from its own collection of this artistic designer.

Still Fong Leng is inspiring new generations with her designs.

The exhibition is until the 16th of March 2014 at Amsterdam Museum, Kalverstraat 92.

Spotted in London: Helen Flanagan for a good cause

Former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan braved the December chill on Wednesday morning, when she joined a group of PETA members next to the Covent Garden Christmas tree in London with a sign reading, "Keep It Fur-Free Under the Xmas Tree", to encourage consumers to leave fur off their holiday shopping lists.

"Fur is cruel and gruesome, and it belongs squarely in Christmas' past", says Flanagan, who was named FHM's "Sexiest Woman in the UK" this year. "With all the wonderful stylish, fur-free designs available today, it's never been easier to celebrate with Christmas gifts that are as kind as they are chic."

Every coat, collar or cuff made of animal fur is a product of immense animal suffering. On fur farms, animals spend their entire lives in tiny, filthy cages before workers kill them by breaking their necks or electrocuting them.
In China - the world's largest fur exporter - some animals who are killed for their fur, including millions of cats and dogs, are even skinned alive. Many top fashion designers - including Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Vivienne Westwood - are 100 percent fur-free.

So join PETA in encouraging Christmas shoppers to Be Nice - Not Naughty - to Animals.

A new project in jewelry by Inez and Vinoodh

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin are best known for their photography and are always experimenting with new ways to express their creativity.

Now they have put their current focus on jewelry with a collection of subtle statement pieces born out of love. They began working with David Rees and Ron Anderson of TenThousandThings, with whom they shot a series of portraits for V Magazine entitled Let Love Adorn You.
In this series, a collection of celebrities and friends close to Inez and Vinoodh and David and Ron are photographed wearing unique jewelry made by TenThousandThings which was then auctioned off with the proceeds going towards the subject’s chosen charity.

This collaboration sparked an idea which led to Inez and Vinoodh’s own project with the jewelers. The collection started with a necklace that Vinoodh designed for Inez as a symbol of their love and of their son, Charles Star. The black oxidized silver chain holds their two wedding rings intertwined (kissing) with a small star pendant.
Karlie Kloss

There are ten different versions (Charles is turning ten this year) where a symbolic precious stone hangs off the bottom wedding ring: a ruby as big as a drop of blood, a clear baby diamond briolette, an emerald, a white Tahitian pearl, a black Tahitian pearl, a turquoise heart, a tooth made out of pink love stone, an amber drop, a sapphire and a diamond pave rock.

The eleventh necklace holds all of the above. The same series is made in 18K rose and 18K yellow gold. The intertwined wedding rings and their precious drop exist as rings, earrings, and bangles. The fine delicate friendship bracelet version has the exact same elements, as does the unisex leather collection of multicolored necklaces and bracelets.

The Jewelry Collection symbolizes love and unity in all of their splendor. This will also be represented by an ongoing serious of portraits of people who are bonded to each other in their own form of love, be it familial, professional, emotional or otherwise.
