Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam 21st edition closes

The closing catwalk show by designer Paul Schulten last night brought an end to the 21st edition of the Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam.
The festival of Dutch fashion was ten days of exuberant celebrations, many new connections both within and beyond the fashion world were made, and the participating designers and the event itself has undergone tremendous growth.

For five days, established designers such as Spijkers en Spijkers and Tony Cohen showed their latest collections in the splendid setting of the Gashouder.
But also the talents of 'Lichting 2014 supported by V&D' took to the 37 meter long catwalk last week. The elected winner Bastian Visch benefits not only from all the media attention but his collection will also be produced and put on sale. A great start to a promising fashion career.

The catwalk schedule also clearly showed that the designers don’t just accept things as they are. Claes Iversen transformed the catwalk into a long stairway, on which his first pret-a-porter collection literally stood on a pedestal. The performance 'ZERO by Nanine Linning with costumes by Iris van Herpen' combined the worlds of fashion, music and dance in a theatre-worthy performance, which included exposing the visitors to the world’s only 4D sound system.
This edition also saw the first photography made with a drone, gliding above the catwalk.

For five days long, Transformatorhuis was the home of special collections, bold materials and convention-breaking presentations. Here designers such as Olaf Hussein and Mirte van Wijngaarden proved themselves to be worthy debutants in the 'Vodafone First Fashion LAB’. Visitors not only witnessed sustainable innovation on but also above the catwalk: for the first time LED catwalk-lighting was used, a world première!

This summer, as in the previous edition, a limited number of tickets was available for the public to attend the catwalk shows in the Gashouder and the Transformatorhuis.
Additionally, fashion lovers were treated by ‘Zalando presents 10 Days Downtown’ for ten days, to ten fashion events at ten high-profile locations throughout the city. Each time the focus was on fashion in relation to a creative discipline such as photography, dance or art.
In doing so the Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam platform was not only accessible to a wide audience, but fashion designers also had the opportunity to work on their reputation and increase their market. The Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Roadshow in Amersfoort, Apeldoorn, Arnhem and Nijmegen made an important contribution to this too.

That fashion, in addition to a creative side, also has a business side was clearly visible during Keys to Success, ‘Business Monday’ at the Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam. Together with members of the Fashion in Business Network several guest speakers led by Sanne Groot Koerkamp (Textilia) talked about developments and opportunities in fashion logistics. Together they outlined a vision in which fashion logistics bring the on- and offline retail together, with reduced costs and increasing revenues as a result.

The 22nd edition of the Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam will take place from 16-26 January 2015. Additionally in the coming months FashionWeek Nederland will also organise various activities for fashion professionals and enthusiasts.

EVAN menswear @ Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Amsterdam

Yesterday it was for the second time that Evana Kuik presented her collection for EVAN menswear during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Amsterdam.

EVAN menswear is a new menswear label, with a fresh look at the needs of the man of today’s world. Past and present as well as old and new meanings come together and create ‘A New Businessman’.

The collections are conceptual and at the same time wearable, with emphasis on overcoats, suits and distinctive jumpers. Focusing on functionality and detail, EVAN menswear shows classic clean shapes and sportswear elements merging into a contemporary and new silhouette.

Inspired by music, sports and subcultures creates the label a refreshing modern look for the 'new businessman' today. Under the concept 'The youth of this nation' is the spring / summer 2015 collection based on the diversity and contrasting emotions in young generations. The designer works with themes such as fear versus fearlessness, multitasking and independence from madness and solitude.

The label EVAN Menswear remains recognizable in the characteristic combination of sporty elements with classical forms, as well as by the use of heavy equipment and a typical color palette. Controversial statements as "Jesus saves the youth" label reflects his rebellious nature.
It is remarkable that not only men are under the patronage of EVAN Menswear. Also, women are enamoured of Evana's androgynous designs.

The label opens on Wednesday the 16th of July, a pop-up store in Rotterdam city center.

Caltagirone's Ceramic Tiles @ Dolce & Gabbana autumn/winter 2014 couture show

Seeing this dress at Dolce & Gabbana autumn/winter 2014 couture show. it reminds me off the amazing ceramic-tiled steps in Caltagirone, Sicily.
Proving that Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are still inspired by the landscapes of Sicily in Italy and not only promoting their designs but also their roots. All the collection sensed Italy.

Dolce & Gabbana presented their first Alta Moda show in Taormina, Sicily, Italy on the 9th of July.

Olaf Hussein’s debut @ Mercedes Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam by Vodafone Firsts Fashion LAB

Last night Olaf Hussein’s debut launched Vodafone Firsts Fashion LAB, the talent and innovation programme from FashionWeek Nederland and Vodafone.

Until 14 July the Vodafone Firsts Fashion LAB offers eleven fashion shows from young designers who experience their 'first' on the catwalk of Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam.
They are encouraged to break fashion conventions and experiment with materials, the composition of their collection and the style of their presentations. These are ‘the ones to watch' for those who want to get to know a new generation of Dutch fashion designers.

Olaf Hussein is a young Amsterdam menswear label with a clear goal: to produce top quality denim that remains close to the classic style while comprising new and modern silhouettes. The label debuted last night at Vodafone Firsts Fashion LAB.

By making the collection immediately available, Olaf Hussein broke an important barrier in the conventional fashion system, where much time elapses between the moment of presentation and the moment of actually being able to wear new fashion.
Partner Vodafone ensured that with the mobile-responsive site www.olafhussein.com and smart technology, visitors could admire and order the collection there and then.

Abundance of talent in the Tranformatorhuis

The programme in the coming days is also bursting with talented designers, for example, on Friday, 11 July with the Fashion LAB duo show from Mirte van Wijngaarden and Maaike Fransen. Mirte presents a collection about the transformation from boy to man and Maaike’s collection tells the story of disorder and compulsive collecting. Maaike comes from the Design Academy and is exemplary of the atypical approach to fashion from the Vodafone Firsts Fashion LAB.

Another highlight is Jonathan Christopher Homme’s presentation with his masculine silhouettes against the background of a ‘dark world’ on Sunday, 13 July. This forms a sharp contrast to the refined work of David Laport who shows feminine creations with surprising materials based on structures from the insect world.
David Laport, along with the rebellious but classically styled collection from EVAN Menswear and the garden of Versailles-inspired show from the Maison the Faux, can be seen on Monday, 14 July.

Vodafone Firsts Fashion LAB helps realise fashion dream

Vodafone Firsts Fashion Lab serves as a breeding ground and platform for promising fashion designers to express their creativity freely. In the programme FashionWeek Nederland and Vodafone help the new generation of designers realise their ultimate dream: becoming a successful fashion designer.
Throughout the year they are given guidence through workshops, presentations and meetings and during Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam they get the chance to shine on a professional catwalk for a national and international audience. Vodafone dedicates its mobile network to increase the reach of these designers exponentially, for example by broadcasting all the shows via a live stream in the FashionWeek Nederland App.
