Fashion Illustrator Shamekh Bluwi using photography & architecture

Reading Textilia I came across a fashion illustrator who uses photos of architecture in his drawings and captures these creations in front of other architecture. I was impressed by his appealing work and I am sharing it.

Here a glimpse of his illustrations.

But have a chance to see all of his work on Instagram. For example I love the illustration of the zebra dress with zebras coming out of it!

Miss Asia Kinney by Steven Meisel for Coach Fall 2015 ad campaign

Miss Asia Kinney is captured by Steven Meisel for the fall 2015 ad campaign of Coach, a luxury fashion accessory brand with handbags and gifts.

But who is Miss Asia Kinney? It is the french bulldog of Lady Gaga. We don't see it very often that only a dog or cat covers the whole advertisement of a fashion brand. But Coach did it!

#AchieveMore with the Five to Nine newspaper

Microsoft Lumia announced the launch of a limited edition commuter newspaper, The Five to Nine, with five daily issues to be published between 22 June and 26 June and distributed the following morning.

The Five to Nine newspaper will inspire and encourage people to get out of the office and do what’s creatively and personally important to them.

As people work longer hours, they are not able to spend time doing the things they are passionate about outside of work. The Five to Nine newspaper demonstrates what can be achieved by using technology to work smarter and more efficiently.

Microsoft Lumia also believe that when people are happy and inspired they work more efficiently, so whilst most newspapers lead with stories on crime, disasters and scandal, The Five to Nine newspaper will focus on positive, uplifting content.

Speaking at the launch of the newspaper, Jules Grudniewicz, Campaigns and Partnerships Manager for Microsoft Devices in UK & Ireland, says: “With time so often at a premium, Microsoft Lumia is committed to enabling people to get the most out of their days. Using the combined power of Microsoft devices, we will create a fresh new publication that will help commuters go to work with a smile on their faces, reinvigorated.”

- #AchieveMore -

Each edition of the newspaper is being curated in collaboration with the editorial teams from some of the UK’s most exciting and forward- thinking print and online publications, covering five themes. They are:

Monday 22nd June | Culture: Protein
Tuesday 23rd June | Music: Boiler Room
Wednesday 24th June | Fashion: Schön!
Thursday 25th June | Design: Grafik
Friday 26th June | Sport: The Green Soccer Journal

In addition to commissioned content, the newspaper will crowd source “good news” stories, life hacks and musings from contributors across the UK via collaborator networks and social media. Budding creatives and members of the public can submit content using the hashtag #AchieveMore.

Each day’s editorial team will also host a free workshop where members of the public can learn a new skill or listen to an industry professional at The Five to Nine workspace at Protein Studios in East London.

‘The Five to Nine’ newspaper will be edited every day between 5pm and 9pm at Protein Studios, 31 New Inn Yard, London EC2A 3EY and 10,000 copies of The Five to Nine newspaper will be distributed the next morning at creative and commuter hubs in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol and Edinburgh.

William Rowe, Founder and CEO of Protein, says, “With Microsoft Lumia, you have everything you need to write, take photos, create, design and manage at your fingertips. We’re incredibly excited about the challenge and can’t wait to see the results.”

“Uncivilized Cameo” by Pericles Kondylatos for Summer 2015

Pericles Kondylatos presents for summer 2015 a hybrid collection which was born out of the interaction of “civilized’ people, with “savage” tribes.

The “savages” were forced to learn, read, suppress their sexual instincts and bow to the morals of religion.
The “civilized” people saw the freedom of their spirit and they envied them, for their pure way of thinking and living in harmony to themselves and the cosmos.

Slowly the “civilized” people realized that it was themselves those who truly were uncivilized, and tried to imitate the tribes of the jungle, so they started growing beards, piercing their ears, and drawing tattoos all over their bodies… they were becoming free men.

Pericles created the collection as an ode, last hurrah to society’s downfall.

Here a glimpse of the collection "Uncivilized Cameo".

When art meets advertising - a short review

Reading an interesting book on creative effective advertising by Mihai Nadin & Richard Zakia I will look into their statement that most popular paintings used in American advertisements are Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Michelangelo's Creation and Grant Woods' American Gothic.

So triggered by this statement, I was wondering if these paintings are also used in fashion advertisements.

About Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa:
Also know as "La Gioconda", her mysterious smile was painted between 1503 and 1506. The painting presents a woman in half-body portrait, which has as a backdrop a distant landscape and has been an inspiration for many painters, photographers and writers.

Fashion photographers Mario Sorrenti and Steven Meisel were inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci in their ad campaigns for resp. Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton.
Steven Meisel captured Noot Seear for Yves Saint Laurent ad campaign spring-summer 1999

Gisele Bundchen captured by Steven Meisel for Louis Vuitton ad campaign spring-summer 2014
About Grant Woods' American Gothic:
A man, a woman, a house and a pitchfork. Those four elements make Grant Wood's depression-era painting (1930), American Gothic, recognizable and easily copied.

As it is used in many ways, like in political, popular, and artistic themes, I can't present you one used in a fashion ad.
On The Fashionisto I found an editorial for i_D magazine in spring 2010 by Boo George featuring Marko Brozic and Nia, styled by Caroline Newell.

About Michelangelo's Creation:
The Creation of Adam is a fresco painting by Michelangelo, which forms part of the Sistine Chapel's ceiling, painted around 1511. It illustrates the Biblical creation narrative from the Book of Genesis in which God breathes life into Adam, the first man.
The most used detail of the painting is the almost touching of the hands, the 'electric spark' between the fingers.

Although used in many ways in advertisement, especially the hands, I couldn't find one in fashion advertisement or even in an editorial. But when it comes up I will share it with you!
And when you find it first, let me know!

So may these amazing paintings been used most in American advertisements in fashion advertisements there are not prominent present.

Artistic Cats by Marie Cécile Thijs

Award winning photograph by Marie Cecile Thijs: Her Majesty - a cat with a crown
Her Majesty
Lately Facebook is all about cute videos and photos of cats, kittens, dogs and puppies and so on. To be honest I shared my favorites too!

But Marie Cécile Thijs gave a new dimension to cats in her art photography.

In her series Majestic, she created surrealistic portraits of majestic cats dressing them up with little crowns, and in her series White Collar she 'dressed' a cat up with a collar.

The Photograph Her Majesty has been awarded in the Masters Cup 2013 as winner in the category Fine Art.

So do you think that I can dress up my stray cats for such an amazing art shoot?

Cats with crown

Art photography by Marie Cecile Thijs

About the artist
Marie Cécile Thijs is a portraitist with a distinctive signature. Her portraits are still lifes, and her still lifes become portraits. She is influenced by the old masters in painting, yet her work is clearly contemporary. Stillness is key.

Marie Cécile Thijs, originally a lawyer, decided more than fifteen years ago to follow her love for the camera. She is specialised in staged photography, and created the series White Collar (including Cat with White Collar), Food Portraits, Chefs (Cooks), Horses and Human Angels, which are still in progress to this day. She also made many portraits of writers, politicians, designers and artists.

Her work has often been published and exhibited, her photos have repeatedly received international acclaim and are included in the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Museum Rotterdam and many public and private art collections. Recently her book 'Characters' is published.

'Characters' shows a broad overview of the work that Marie Cécile Thijs has made over the last 15 years. Next to her highlights, also lesser well known and some yet unpublished works are incorporated in this book. There’s an introduction by writer and philosopher Désanne van Brederode.

Foxes for H&M Autumn 2015 campaign

H&M announced that British singer-songwriter and Grammy Award winner Foxes will be the face of a new campaign this July, featuring the first looks from Divided for autumn 2015.

The campaign was shot in Los Angeles, with Foxes wearing a cool mix of new season essentials: bomber jackets, varsity sweatshirts, slogan T-shirts, mini skirts and bootcut jeans. The collection will be available in selected H&M stores worldwide, as well as online, from mid-July.

“It was so much fun shooting the H&M campaign. The clothing has tons of character, which means you can really play with the looks and the best thing is it all still feels like me,” says Foxes.

It’s a playful mix that allows for experimentation with personal style, like a sheer mustard lace top, a long black fluffy-knit sleeveless cardigan, or ethnic print mini shorts. Accessories are essential to the look, especially wide-brimmed hats, and chunky-heeled platform boots.

“Foxes has the perfect style for this campaign – her effortless look is so inspiring. It’s about a mix of fun pieces that can be worn together in so many different ways,” says Pernilla Wohlfahrt, H&M’s Head of Design.

Unicoin - The first currency dedicated to do good launched today

Today, the H&M Conscious Foundation in support of UNICEF presents a new currency to the world - the Unicoin. The initiative aims to enable children to support the right for other children around the world to access learning opportunities from an early age. The only way to get hold of a Unicoin is to exchange a drawing at unicoins.org. And the only way to spend it is on educational supplies.

Scientific evidence on brain development shows that the early years of a child’s life - from birth to age 8 years of age - are critical to its ability to learn. Recent advances in neuroscience have improved our understanding of how the brain develops in the first years of life, and a growing body of research has made it increasingly clear that programs that intervene early, especially for the most disadvantaged children, lead to better outcomes for children, their parents and society at large. Still, more than 200 million children under the age of 5 in developing countries are failing to reach their full potential in cognitive development because of poverty, poor health and nutrition, and deficient care.

With this new innovative activity the H&M Conscious Foundation supports UNICEF in raising awareness about the importance of Early Childhood Development and at the same time provides an opportunity for people to contribute.

Together with their parents, children can upload a drawing on unicoins.org, showing what they dream of becoming when they grow up. Then they exchange it for a Unicoin, to support every child’s right to early childhood development, care and pre-primary education. The H&M Conscious Foundation matches each Unicoin with one notebook and pencil. The material is being distributed to children around the world by UNICEF.

“No matter where you live, all children have one thing in common - the ability to dream. By sharing children’s drawings, we can help more children to reach their full learning potential and build a better future for themselves,” says Charlotte Brunnström, Program Manager for Education at the H&M Conscious Foundation.

The Unicoin campaign is part of the Global Program for Education – a collaboration between H&M Conscious Foundation and UNICEF, initiated in 2014. In February 2014, the H&M Conscious Foundation announced a grant to UNICEF of 9,3 million US Dollars over a three year period. This grant enables UNICEF to reach 73,600 children with Early Childhood Development programs as well as influence governments to place Early Childhood Development on the national agenda and commit budgetary resources to address these issues. Few donors or governments prioritize funding for Early Childhood Development, which is why the H&M Conscious Foundation wants to contribute to filling that gap by supporting UNICEF.

"1 out of 3 children in the developing world don’t achieve their full potential before entering primary school due to causes linked to poverty, lack of access to learning opportunities, poor health, and malnutrition. But together we can change this by providing the most disadvantaged children with access to early childhood care and education. At UNICEF and H&M Conscious Foundation we believe that it is possible to give every child the best possible start in life. Help us spread the word by joining the Unicoin campaign today,” says Pia R. Britto, Senior Advisor, Chief Early Childhood Development Section, UNICEF Headquarters.

Infographics and images, information about the Unicoin, how to exchange a drawing, and Early Childhood Development can be found at www.unicoins.org
