Borders / Crossroads @ Medphoto festival

The first Medphoto festival will take place in Rethymno, Crete during the summer months from June until September. It will host a number of exhibitions and events, that present important works of Greek and foreign photographers.

Medphoto Festival is a new initiative in the area of photography in Greece. It is the vision of photographer Pavlos Fysakis and the NGO KOLEKTIV8, in association with the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete.

Medphoto’s target is to bring the audience closer to the art of documentary, by presenting works of photography and video (lens-based arts). Medphoto is organised by a team that consists of photographers and editors, in collaboration with cultural institutions from all over the world, and it is opening up to the international cultural community.

Crete, the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, is nothing but a gateway that brings together three continents (Europe, Africa and Asia), highlighting the importance of the geographical and cultural boarders, that are the main theme of the festival for this inaugural year. As attested by the title: «Βorders / Crossroads», this year’s Medphoto is focusing on the subject of immigration crisis.
The festival puts in discussion the desperate search for a home, the struggle of the immigrants for social integration during these troubled times, the humanitarian crisis and the social unrest in the area of the Mediterranean, as well as the role Europe plays, pointing out the main pathologies of this time and place: the financial and political dead-end, the war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa, the rising racism, the social conflicts and the ever-present intolerance.

Photo Festival Crete
Antoine d''Agata
In the core of the Festival are four basic exhibitions, picturing a whole network of correlations and routes through which the complicated matter of the moving populations and the crisis is described:

“Crossings”, a group exhibition at the Old Commercial Bank’s building (Old Town)

Curators: Giorgos Moutafis, Pavlos Fysakis

Duration: 9 June – 15 July

Artists: Socrates Baltagiannis, Loulou D’Aki, Alfredo D’Amato, Dimitris Michalakis, Giorgos Moutafis, Myrto Papadopoulou, Alessandro Penso, Giulio Piscitelli, Jerome Sessini, Angelos Tzortzinis, Emilien Urbano, Achilleas Zavallis

The exhibition presents the routes of refugees towards and across Europe. It is hosted in the old Commercial Bank’s building, an aspect that marks the relationship between the recession and the displacement of populations.

The photographs come from the shores of Lesbos, the port of Piraeus, the crossings of immigrants to Africa, the torn-apart Syria, the Calais Jungle, the settlements in Patra and Idomeni, the smugglers’ hotels in Smyrna.

Exhibition “Critical Archives II: Testimonies”, Kara Moussa Pasha Mosque

Curators : Maria Maragkou, Pavlos Fysakis

Duration: 9 June – 20 July

Artists: Apostolos Zerdevas («State»), Giorgos Moutafis («My Arab World»), Issa Touma («Nine Days»)

This is a video series, documenting important international affairs, like the war in Syria, the Arab Spring and the action of a terrorist group in Middle East.

The artists have created a collage of experiences: Giorgos Moutafis in “My Arab World” works as an eye-witness, recording scenes that take place right in front of the press-photographer. Issa Touma, in his video “Nine Days” communicates the image as well as the experience of a person-potential victim: he sees -and at the same time records- trapped inside his own house, the happenings of a war that takes place right outside of his own window,. Finally, Apostolos Zerdevas in “State”, uses the video recordings of extremists and isolates snapshots with his own camera, trying to critically reflect on the news and the Media.

Group Exhibition: “Alien Territory”, Twin Building inside the Fortezza Castle in Rethymno

Curators: Yorgos Prinos, Pavlos Fysakis

Duration : 10 June – 15 July

Artists: George Awde, Antonis Damolis, Konstantinos Doumpenidis, Petros Efstathiadis, Giorgos Gavrilakis, Olga Gortsa, Yorgos Karailias, Yannis Karpouzis, Marily Konstantinopoulou, Charalambos Kydonakis, Randa Mirza, Marita Pappa, Georges Salameh, Orestis Seferoglou, Kosmas Stathopoulos, Eliza Tamo, Serkan Taycan, Antonis Theodoridis, Marinos Tsagarakis, Nikolas Ventourakis

Working on a more symbolic subject, this exhibition (inside the town castle) is the effort to research our internal state, the state of everyone living from the inside of the border, regardless of their descent, trying to find meaning in an uncertain era, an era of insecurity, crisis and increasing inequality. Alien Territory is the uncharted area of our familiar environment, where our own self is the stranger.

Exhibition: “Critical Archives I: Ruins” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Crete

Curators: Maria Maragkou, Pasqua Vorgia, Pavlos Fysakis

Duration: 11 June – 30 September

Artists:

  • 18 ANO Photographic Team (The Zone)

For the first time in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, there is a discussion between four international photographers. Antoine D’Agata presents a very special sequence of images, concerning the daily life of the refugees. In the work by Francesco Zizola, we see a monumental photograph from the tragic shipwreck of Lampedusa, while Davide Monteleone is photographing the personal belongings of the passengers of the ship that have been washed to the shore. Hrair Sarkissian reveals, through his photographs, the feeling of dedication to home, even when danger and distraction lay in wait.

Nikos Markou, in a sequence of short videos, invites the audience to have a brief but penetrating look in the life of various people of the contemporary Greek reality and finally Emilien Urbano completes this puzzle with his photographs of Kurdish fighters in the city of Nusaybin.

Design a royal bag!

The Joke Veeze Foundation in cooperation with the Museum of Bags and Purses organises an international competition for young designers around the theme 'Royal Bags'.

This is the second time that the Joke Veeze Foundation is sponsoring a contest for new talent in fashion design and styling.

The 2016 Joke Veeze Award will be presented to the designer who creates the most amazing bag.

Not surprisingly, the competition is being organised together with The Museum of Bags and Purses, a well known museum in Amsterdam that celebrated its 20th anniversary.
As part of this jubilee year, a special exhibition will open in October 2016: Royal Bags will display bags carried by members of European royal families.
The Joke Veeze Foundation sees this as the perfect occasion to present its Joke Veeze Award this year for the design of a spectacular bag – and especially because Joke Veeze simply loved bags and purses. The grand prize is € 5,000 and the public’s choice award is € 2,000.

The theme chosen for the contest also reflects the museum’s anniversary exhibition: Royal Bags. The contest aims to attract submissions from new designer talent such as students and recent (within 2 or 3 years) graduates of art and fashion design academies and is intended for people who are professionally active in fashion and design.

This is an international competition in that students at academies in other European countries are being invited to participate. At the same time that the Royal Bags exhibition is held at The Museum of Bags and Purses, a separate exhibition will be showing the most interesting designs submitted to this competition, and visitors can select their favourite. The designs made by the two award winners will be included in the museum’s permanent collection.

‘Design a royal bag’

The criteria for designing the bag:

The design is innovative and avant-garde
The design is functional and carriable
The design displays fine craftsmanship
The design is trendsetting: a new must-have
The design has a royal look (perhaps with a tongue-in-cheek reference)
The bag can be made in any material

Submissions must be accompanied by a statement of the designer’s objective (no more than 300 words) possibly supplemented by design sketches/material samples and a CV.

The jury consists of:
Sigrid Ivo, Director-Curator, The Museum of Bags and Purses
Frans Ankoné, CreativeDirector and Stylist
Martijn Nekoui, Founder and Creative Director, MOAM Amsterdam
Cor Schrama, Chairman, Joke Veeze Foundation

Registration for the competition involves completing a form available at the Joke Veeze Foundation website: www.jokeveezefoundation.nl. The website also provides additional information about procedures and the email address to which the designer’s objective and CV should be sent.

The deadline for submission is Monday, 29th of August 2016. The actual bag designed by the participant must be sent to: Tassenmuseum Hendrikje, t.a.v. drs. S. Ivo, Herengracht 573, 1017 CD Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

All about classic & vintage cars in Zoetermeer

Today it was the 16th edition of the so called Oldtimersdag Zoetermeer, classic and vintage cars came to visit the old city center of Zoetermeer and some of them took part at the rally.

Surprising for me was to see how especially the men get 'crazy' for these cars, trucks and motorbikes...and of course looking at and admiring the engines.

As I am more interested in the vintage style I was spotting some interesting styles! Including a cute young lady, dressed for the occasion.

Here a glimpse of the event.

Crinoline @ Fashion Museum Hasselt

What is crinoline?

In a previous post you could read all about the exhibition Haute-a-porter at the Fashion Museum in Hasselt, Belgium. Now I have a closer look at the fabulous dresses at the museum. In this post all about crinoline, a stiffened or structured petticoat to support a women's skirt.

It has often revived in historical and contemporary fashion since its appearance in the mid-19th century. One of its well-known relaunches was made by Christian Dior in the 'Golden Age of Couture' around the fifties, the new look!

The crinoline, in its most extreme form, was not designed for the masses, but exclusively for the wealthy who could afford haute couture.
Like the corset, there have been many discussions about the crinoline, ranging from gender debates to health issues.

In contemporary fashion, the crinoline is present in a variety of forms, not only in the field of haute couture but also in more mainstream pret-a-porter fashion.

Stelios Koudounaris Spring Summer 2016

Stelios Koudounaris presents his Spring-Summer 2016 collection.

The greek-cypriot fashion designer is inspired by the architecture of the ancient Greeks.

The architecture is applied in a unique way in the drawings, transforming natural shapes in dresses with complex structure. Despite the rigor and dynamism of the Doric order the designer combines grace, comfort and finesse in his collection.

The exquisitely beautiful detailing, translated in his own unique way, the beauty of the time to consider and adapt to today. Fabrics embossed, creased and motion and eternal silk that give the necessary gloss and identify female body.  The recognisable androgynous silhouette of Stelios Koudounaris appears in almost every part of the collection.

Here a glimpse of his lookbook.

Athina Korda Spring-Summer 2016 'Mute'

Athina Korda presents her spring-summer 2016 collection 'Mute'.

The greek fashion designer is inspired by the blue calm between the charming ocean. Trying to reflect the intensity of the waves and their way to the shore, the black color is used to give tension, with blue and raf, ending in white.

The fabrics are soft, giving a sense of freedom and allowing the body to move and to breathe effortlessly while geometric lines and strict cuts clearly remain as the identity of the designer.

A special combination reflects the contrast of elements in the ocean, simultaneously tranquility and an incredible dynamic...

With other words, a silent force that is identified with the woman of today and to enjoy the entire collection from morning till night, whether in a city or landscape!
