Race for the cure in Athens

Today around 11.000 participants run or walked the Race for the cure in the center of Athens. The Race against breast cancer. It is organized for the third time in Athens.

A quote from the press release:
“Every 68 seconds somewhere around the world a woman dies from breast cancer.
In 2011, 1.300.000 women globally (4.500 women in Greece) will be diagnosed with breast cancer. However, breast cancer can be cured if there is an early diagnosis!
Race for the Cure® is recognized as the most successful campaign worldwide targeting the mobilization and awareness of the general public concerning breast cancer."

The Race for Cure started in 1983 in Dallas, USA, by Nancy Brinker for the Susan G. Komen for the cure foundation with only 800 participants, today it is an international movement organizing every year such a race to get awareness about the importance of early diagnosis. This year there are 146 races worldwide.
