Zakira presents Ru'aa photo exhibition
Zakira, the Image Festival Association and the Spanish NGO Cives Mundi, cordially invite you to a photo exhibition Ru'aa by 80 young refugees and immigrants of 7 different nationalities living in Nabaa, Beirut and Ain El-Helwe, Saida.
The exhibition “Ru’aa” (Visions) is the result of a project which provided photography training to 80 young adults from various refugee communities living in Lebanon. Through the six month duration of the project, the participants attended workshops in photographic theory and practice. The students are between the ages of 14 and 18 and live on the outskirts of Beirut and Sidon coming from a number of countries including Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, the Philippines, Sudan and Syria amongst others.
Ru’aa aims to raise awareness of the participants’ culture through the images of their daily lives as they themselves portray them. Through their photos, the teenagers get to know the commonalities between their geographically distant cultures, as well as the similarities in the daily lives they lead in the same city.
Opening at Dar Al Mussawir, Hamra on Tuesday October 9th at 6pm
Exhibit open until October 16th.
Funded by AECID, The Spanish Agency for International Development and Cooperation
Zakira - “memory” in Arabic – is an all-volunteer organization devoted to the promotion of photography in Lebanon as an art form, a means of honest reporting and a professional skill. Zakira was born out of its first project "Lahza" with the mission to bring arts and culture to the children of the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Since then, a book of the students’ photographs has been published, and the best have been displayed in exhibitions in Beirut and Paris. Zakira has since developed into an NGO registered with the Lebanese government. Whilst continuously developing new projects, its main activities are to organize photography workshops, as well as exhibitions for professionals and amateurs.
