5 Top Exhibitions to see in January 2019

With the kick off of 2019 let us make a list of interesting exhibitions to visit in January on Fashion or Art!

  1. Classic Beauties

  2. The exhibition Classic Beauties offers an interesting journey through European Neoclassicism, including the unrivalled Canova collection with The Three Graces. On show until the 13th of January 2019 in The Hermitage Amsterdam.
The human body has fascinated artists throughout the centuries. In the mid-eighteenth century this topic in art was given a new lease of life due to spectacular archaeological discoveries in Italy. Artists like Canova, Thorvaldsen, Mengs, Kauffmann and Batoni pursued ultimate perfection, surpassing even the (aesthetic) ideals of the Greeks and Romans. Many artists and high-ranking young men set off for Italy to see the sources of inspiration for themselves. In this exhibition, the visitor takes a Grand Tour of the finest examples of Neoclassical art from the Hermitage.

  3. Femme Fatales

  4. Femme Fatales is the first exhibition in fashion history to focus exclusively on female designers.
Do they design differently for women than their male counterparts? What influence have they had? What does being a woman mean in terms of their creations? And what is their vision for fashion? The exhibition will include work by Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, Sonia Rykiel, Miuccia Prada, Maria Grazia Chiuri (Dior), Dutch greats like Fong Leng, Sheila de Vries and Iris van Herpen, and many others. The exhibition is in Gemeentemuseum Den Haag until the 24th of March.

  5. Made in Italy

  6. ‘Made in Italy’ is an exhibition of fashion and accessories created by leading Italian designers including Prada, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana at the Museum of Bags and Purses (Tassenmuseum Hendrikje Amsterdam) and will be on display until the 17th of February. Discover exactly what makes the Italian style so distinctive by looking at fashions and accessories created by leading Italian designers. Many of the items on display were worn by such celebrities as Sophia Loren, Barbra Streisand and Lady Gaga.

  7. Jan Jansen - 50 years of Shoe Design

  8. In Apeldoorn at CODA Jan Jansen presents a selection from his 50 years of shoe design.  He designed more than 4000 shoes. Together with his wife Tonny he selected 75 pairs of shoes for this exhibition. The dutch designer was praised for the combination between functionality and unique design. They are all original and quirky; from the 'wooden shoe' Woody from 1969, the bamboo shoe from 1973, the shoe with floating heel Love from 1989 up to the X-ray with 3D printed heel with United Nude in 2017. Until the 20th of January 2019 the shoes will be on display.

  9. Backstage/Frontstage

  10. The exhibition Backstage / Frontstage, which will be on display until the 17th of March 2019 at the Hasselt Fashion Museum, offers a look behind the scenes of fashion shows. In the backstage, a place that the public rarely sees, magic arises: models, stylists, make-up artists and designers are united in one creative hub that works towards the start of the show. The backstage images of the Limburg photographer Marleen Daniƫls (1958) are the reason for the exhibition. Daniel's images, photographed largely analogue and dating from the period 1988-2008, are unique memories of a time when shows were accessible only to a select audience. Using video, photography and silhouettes from leading designers and fashion houses such as Dries Van Noten, Yohji Yamamoto, Dior and John Galliano you will be guided backstage.
